Acanthamoeba is the bacteria which causes Microbial Keratitis (an infection of the cornea which can cause blindness) and it is particularly difficult to treat because of its resistance to available drugs. Researchers found that this infection can be treated by using germicidal contact lenses. They manufactured plasma-activated silicone hydrogel contact lenses, which contain a gentle germicidal effect which is able to oxidize and destroy membranes of the amoebas.
